Learning Spelling:
- Get letter flashcards and letter combination flash cards (re, th, ea, ck...) and have them make words
- Write a beginning letter and an ending letter on a whiteboard. Have them fill in the blank to make a word. Beginners "C_T" is "CAT" then on to "C__T" for "COAT" or "CAST" or "CART" and even when the kids are MUCH older do things like "C________T" and see what they come up with "Croissant", "Continent". At that point, any adults could get involved and see who can come up with the most words. If (at any age) a word is misspelled, let it be a teaching time.
Learning to Write
- Have them make their own flashcards, perhaps for younger kids in the family
- Have you heard the game "Headbandz"? Make your own headbands with clips in the front. Then have flashcards with only a picture on it "cat", "heart", "jacket", "rug" (depending on child's reading level). Have them spell the words underneath the picture. Then play the game.
